Our Brief History

2008

The history of Mount Kenya University (MKU) in Rwanda, dates back in 2008 when the University entered into a memorandum of understanding with Rwanda Tourism University College (RTUC) now known as University of Tourism and Business (UTB) to offer its degree programme for Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBIT) to deserving students who had pursued a higher Diploma in IT at Kigali Institute of Technology (KIST).

2009

The cost of studying overseas was too expensive for the ordinary Rwandan and with the above in mind; Mount Kenya University management saw the need to play a part in building capacity in Rwanda at an affordable cost. After graduating its first batch of 32 BBIT students with RTUC in 2009, the university applied for a license to operate a campus in Rwanda.

August, 2010

The university was granted permission to operate a campus in August 2010 by the Ministry of Education through the White Paper Ref. Number 122612.00/2010 on the basis of Code of Practice of Cross-Border Provision of Higher Education in Rwanda and on the principle of mutual recognition protocols of the East Africa Community.

May, 2011

With a student population of about 200, at its rented premise on KN4 Avenue 28 formerly Avenue De La Paix, a faculty of talented scholars and teachers. With increased enrollment, the campus opened centers in Kicukiro and Camp Kigali offering programmes in nine (9) schools. Doctorates of Philosophy (PHD), Masters, Bachelors, Diplomas, and Professional certificate courses.

March, 2012

Its MBA programme became so popular due to its quality and affordability that the University now boasts of many graduates in Rwanda. The University enrollment currently stood at 3,000 students and has graduated over 2,000 students.

March, 2018

In keeping with its promise of offering quality, affordable and relevant education as well as building pride in the local community, the university applied to the Higher Education Council (HEC) for autonomy to operate under the name of Mount Kenya University, Rwanda with the motto ‘Empowering Generations through Education’.

2019

Under its strategic plan, the university will now operate independently from the main campus in Kenya at its new ultra modern centre in Kagarama. The centre is already  operational with capacity of about 5,000 students.
